Hi girlies,
This is The Deviant Dispatch. I’m Mo, your guide to the underground. I write about NYC-based events, gay shit, and cool kid gossip. There will be snark, typos, and lots of Charli XCX updates. If you like what you see, become a paying subscriber to get the newsletter weekly, share this with someone, or hit the heart button at the top of the post.
It’s been a slow news week my lovelies. No pressing gossip to report. For sordid tales of underground Brooklyn I’d check out this oral history of the McKibbon lofts that was published on Curbed. However, I would argue that the McKibbon lofts are not still as wild as the headline would have you believe. It does a good job charting the cultural capital of the apt complex, from it’s days as hipster ground zero to the present. Only click if you’re ready for tales of maggots, Four Loko, and the early days of the hacker collective Anonymous.
New party stories are ripe for the making as venues slowly start doing IRL shows again with limited capacity. The punk/garage rock hub Our Wicked Lady and the DIY arts space Rubulad have both announced that they’re doing shows, joining bigger venues like Brooklyn Steel and Terminal 5. There’s also DIY backyard spaces popping up.
Next week I’m going to be doing a roundup of new queer club EPs/albums for the hedonistic summer in store. Make sure you become a paying subscriber so you don’t miss out. Hopefully I can include the Charli XCX 911 remix, which the singer tweeted about working on this week.
Anyway, on with the parties!
Toodles,
Mo
Gigs
When: Thursday May 13th
Where: The Sultan Room
What: Horrorchatta brings the biggest local queens Brooklyn has to offer for this weekly drag show. Last I checked there are still tickets available, so don’t miss out on the magic of IRL drag. Plus it’s Charlene’s birthday week, so the girls will be felling extra wild.
How much: $25 plus fees
Nature’s Candy
When: Saturday May 15th
Where: 3 Dollar Bill’s Big Yard @ 260 Meserole St
What: This outdoor shindig is hosted by Ghetto Gothic founder and cool-girl DJ Venus X and the POC queer party Papi Juice. Expect to see Telfar bags galore and poppin outfits. The “big yard” of 3 Dollar Bill is larger than their huge indoor space, so there will be plenty of space for the cuties to cruise. My sources are saying the tickets are flying fast so get yours now!
How much: $25 plus fees
Spite Fuxxx LIVE IN THE STREETS
When: Saturday 3pm-4pm, 6-7pm
Where: 1 Meadow Street
What: Spite Fuxxx are a messy Brooklyn punk band that are refreshingly anti-astrology. “Bought that chart from Doll's Kill / Libra moon in Myrtle-Wyckoff” they snarl on their 2019 demo “Fuck Yr Star Magic”. You can catch these punks for a rare live show at two separate times this Saturday. Bring your favorite tallboy.
How much: Free
