Hello Deviants,
Welcome to The Deviant Dispatch, your guide to the events and gossip of the underground. Today is Wednesday which means it’s time for events! I’ve got a virtual drag queen wedding to a video game character, a rowdy dance party at a bar, and the chaotic weekly comedy show tackling the racism in all of us.
If you want the gossip (aka the paragraphs of text that proceed the event listings of past issues) you gotta subscribe to the paid tier!
I’m freshly trying to focus my time on other paid writing opportunities, which means I won’t be waxing on here for the non-paying members quite as often. Sorry not sorry! This Friday I plan on giving an update on that mysterious rave that happened below Shea Stadium. Don’t miss it! Upgrade your subscription via the button above.
And now let’s talk about parties!
xoxo Mo
Ziwe’s Instagram Live Show
When: Thursday’s at 8pm EST
Where: Instagram live @ziwef
What: Comedian Ziwe confronts guests about their racism in candid and hilarious interviews. The thrill comes from watching guests like Rose McGowan and Caroline Callaway squirm under prompts like “What do you qualitatively like about Black people?” and “Name 3 black-owned businesses”. Eventually the guests say something racist, which is partly the point. We all have racism in us that we need to talk through and work out. This show provides the thrill of watching someone go through that process under the glare of a Instagram Live setup, and also prompts viewers to do some work on their own.
How Much: Free
Yaeji In Place on BoilerRoom.tv
When: Friday 7PM EST
Where: https://boilerroom.tv/session/yaeji-in-place
What: The producer and sort-of singer Yaeji comes to boiler room TV (who has hosted similar alt-pop figures like Charli XCX) for a special performance. Originally Yaeji was going to be touring all year behind her debut album WHAT WE DREW 우리가 그려왔던 but obviously that is NOT happening. On Instagram Yaeji hyped this upcoming performance by saying “this one isn’t like the show we were going to tour with, but its something special made for What We Drew, made for me and you 💛 with lots of very dear and special guests 💚 Some of those guests will be BK drag queens West Dakota and Dynasty. There’s also going to be a couple of dancers, and an appearance by the mcs G.L.A.M and Nappy Nina.
How Much: free but they’ll be raising funds directly for The Bail Project @bailproject
Water From Your Eyes live on Shipping
When: Friday (unclear when)
Where: https://www.shipping.media/
What: BK experimental dou just put out the slightly hopeful sounding-song “14.” You can see the dou perform it “live” along with other figures from the arty side of the music world on Shipping. The website bills itself as “A STREAMING PLATFORM AND ONLINE DATABASE OF VENUES, ARTISTS, DJS AND COLLECTIVES LIVE STREAMING CONTENT AS WELL AS THEIR FUNDRAISING ORGANIZATIONS, UPDATED DAILY.” Past streams include the DJs Justin Cudmore, Mike Q, as well as singer Xhosa and comedian Rachel Sennott. IDK the people performing with Water From Your Eyes but I trust the curatorial muscle of Shipping.
How Much: Free but donations are going to Trans Lifeline
Wedding: The Final Fantasy
When: Friday 9pm EST
Where: www.twitch.tv/pinwheelpinwheel
What: Pinwheel is the odder of BK drag oddities on the scene. This show is proof of that: a fictional wedding ceremony to a character from the Final Fantasy video game. Performances from @devo.monique , @badgurlpari , @cetaitbontemps, @its.sherrypoppins , and @esthernewyork will follow the ceremony. This whole thing looks batshit and like it will deliver tons of laughs and what the fuck moments.
How Much: free but tip your queens.
P_A_T_ DJs at Happyfun Hideaway
When: Saturday 5 to 11pm!
Where: Happyfun Hideaway 1211 Myrtle Ave
What: The colorful and somewhat crusty queer bar Happyfun Hideaway has had a special magic since they opened for outside drinks. Sure the backyard was always cute, and now there’s more of it thanks to the removal of a non-functional food truck. Now there’s an additional outside area in the front. The drinks come in double and triple sizes, reflecting the glorious time this spring when bars sold huge to-go cocktails. The DJ perches in the window as people twerk drunkenly in the door of the bar, even spilling out into the street. This Saturday the DJ will be P_A_T_, who slaps. Summer in NYC will never die!!!
How Much: Free, the cheapest drinks are like $4-5. Tip %30 if you go.
The Chromatica Hour: Goo Goo for Gaga
When: Saturday 8pm EST
Where: https://www.twitch.tv/wussymag
What: Atlanta queer cuties pay homage to Lady Gaga’s recent underwhelming album. Expect alt comedy sets, some go-go dancing from hot southern fairies, and lots of drawls from drag queen hosts Brigitte Bidet and Ella Saurus Rex.
How Much: $10 suggested donation
Effy Present’s Monday Night Not Raw
When: Monday, 8-11ish EST
Where: https://www.twitch.tv/effylives
What: You may know professional wrestling networks like the WWE, but did you know that there’s a scrappy anti-corporate scene throwing down in bars and concert venues across the country? Effy is one of those independent wrestlers, a faggot in a magenta leather jacket covered in spikes who loves talking shit and showboating in the ring. His Monday night wrestling commentary show is a great showcase of how accessible and campy the sport (?) can be, frequently showcasing women and mixed gender matches. Last week we watched a match with Heather Monroe, a blonde who walked into the ring with a white fur and a Lisa Frank-esque body suit with matching boots. What more do you want?
How Much: FREEEEEEE
