This Art Show Combines Tabloids, Bimbos, and Murder
"The Multiple Murders of Lady Gilgo" ends it's run this weekend
Hi girlies,
This is The Deviant Dispatch. I’m Mo, your guide to the underground. I write about NYC-based events, gay shit, and cool kid gossip. There will be snark, typos, and lots of Charli XCX updates. If you like what you see, become a paying subscriber, share this with someone, or hit the heart button at the top of the post.
Before we get to the titular subject of this newsletter (found at the bottom of this email) I have to indulge in some gossip.
Sir Babygirl’s first show back post-Covid sold out almost immediately (as I predicted). Fortunately Holly Bynum of The Broadway had the sense to add a second date with the same lineup the day before. Tickets for that are on sale at noon today.
More and more venues are rumbling to life with shows announced for the late summer and fall. In the meantime fans of rock music and flared denim can gather at Birdy’s, The Broadway, Our Wicked Lady, and TV Eye.
Azealia Banks seems to gearing up to release new music, making all the homosexuals quiver with excitement. Her single “KANYE WEST (F*ck him all day)” is out July 9th. The beat she posted on Instagram seemed promising, so maybe it’ll be a real banger! Or maybe it’ll be outshined by Mel Incarnate’s debut single “Big Tits” coming out the day before. Either way, time will tell.
After the stimulation of Pride month and 4th of July, I invite all my readers to kick back, relax, lie down, eat some fruit, soak in some water. If you must go out, I’ve provided a few art events and a daytime beach party. Stall well dear readers.
xoxo

The Multiple Murders of Lady Gilgo
When: Thursday- Saturday, 1-6pm, Closing event Friday 6-8pm
Where: Duplex, a new art gallery located at 17 Essex st
What: The solo exhibition of the artist Jake Brush is a must-see. Brush is an artist who dabbles in drag-as-performance art while rejecting the category of “drag performer” all together. While Brush first came to my attention as 1/2 of the duo behind the web series Pubic Access, Brush’s art has an appeal all it’s own.
This exhibit is dominated by a looping video installation, making the show feel like Pickle Suprise for the modern age. Instead of an instructional video for a housewife, the installation uses the format of a reality show interview as a launching pad for absurdity. Brush plays the part of a Rockaway beach woman accused of performing all manor of salacious acts behind her hotdog stand. As the figure onscreen recounts how police and press have misunderstood her, you can turn away from the TV to look at trippy portraits on the walls. They interpolate tabloid headlines as well as more abstract shapes. In the corner are mound-like sculptures of blond wigs, lashes, and nails: symbols of traditional femininity left behind to rot. You see, as much as this exhibit focuses on the “hot dog hooker” it also tackles the bodies of 4 women found on the beach.
The exhibit has been up since May 21st, and this weekend is your final chance to visit. I would recommend going during normal hours so you can take everything in without the distraction from strangers. If you’re in it for the socializing, the gallery is having a closing event this Friday from 6-8pm with readings and performances.
How much: free
Fringe
When: Thursday, July 8th 6-8pm
Where: Denny Dimin Gallery 39 Lispenard ST
What: This show was inspired by the Pattern and Decoration art movement from the 1970s, which was one of the first to prioritize female artists. The works all focus on the mundane repetitiveness of daily life. Expect works about sewing, floral arrangement, and other household tasks, but with a whimsical spin.
How much: free
