The Return of the Spooky + Kooky Str8 to DVD
plus That Kid's release party for his new song "Skater Boy"

Hey cuties,
Welcome to The Deviant Dispatch. I’m Mo, your guide to the underground world of Brooklyn and beyond. On Wednesday I write about events for free. On Friday I write about gossip for money (paying members only). Today’s Wednesday, so (duh) I have some events for you!
The big ticket event this week its Friday’s STR8 TO DVD: Illegal Boomkacks. This crew hasn’t done a show since the Covid-19 spiral began so this is a big deal! Plus it’s happening IRL in Prospect Park, so who knows what kind of shenanigans will ensue (sound trouble? drug use in broad daylight? public nudity?) .
Scroll on to find out the details and check out the other worthy events happening this week. Let this mix by the dance punk band Special Interest be your soundtrack.
xoxo,
Mo
Salud, Sex y Amor
When: Wednesday 7-10pm
Where: Zoom, RSVP for the code at bit.ly/saludsexyamor
What: Papi Juice and Planned Parenthood are collaborating again for another virtual shindig. This one honors Latinx heritage month. Expect DJ sets, a virtual tour of a POC-owned garden, and then some.
How much: free!
Downtown Boys DJ Set at Trans Pecos
When: Thursday 7pm
Where: Trans Pecos
What: I found out about this from Oh My Rockness, and there’s really not much to say. The venue Trans Pecos has their backyard garden open, and some members of the punk band Downtown Boys will be DJing. There will food by @sweetangelbbs supporting @suppercollective, a hot meal mutual aid network that feeds hundreds of folks a week. I’d get there early in case it hits capacity.

Str8 To DVD: Illegal Boomkacks
When: Friday, 5pm
Where: The Vale of Cashmere @ Prospect Park
What: St8 to DVD, gosh what can I say. The once monthly show at the crusty rock venue Gold Sounds (which is disliked even by local punks) is a kooky spooky blast. As queens in the Brooklyn scene have gotten more polished, landing on digital magazine covers and accruing thousands of followers, the ghouls of Str8 to DVD remain as offbeat as ever.
Sherry Poppins went semi-viral on Twitter by lip-syncing the Mii Shop Channel theme. Qhrist with a Q is fond of lip syncing to Evanesce and Cocteau Twins. These two bring a madcap energy to their hosting that’s only matched by Ten Yards K pop-heavy DJ Sets.
The trio have been absent from the virtual drag scene but they’re celebrating their 4 year anniversary by throwing pop up shows in Prospect Park. They’ve assembled a lineup of old faves (Linda Felcher, Maxx Pleasure) with new additions Essence. The whole affair is BYOB (its a park duh) and the group has even posted a map to The Vale of Cashmere if you need help finding it.
How Much: 5-10 suggested donation but also bring AT LEAST $10 in dollar bills to tip the girls
Rally for NYC Nightlife
When: Saturday, 4pm
Where: Maria Hernandez Park
What: The rapper and former political candidate Paperboy is organizing a rally to bring attention to a dire problem: most small New York Venues are in serious trouble. Despite the sidewalk drinks and backyard happy hours, they’re still operating at a loss. If these venues don’t get some assistance soon we’ll see even more close down. This rally is to bring attention to the issue, as well as promote the organization NYC Nightlife United, which runs a relief fund for nightlife workers.
How much: free
That Kid x Subculture party: Skater Boy Release Party
When: Saturday 9pm EST
Where: Zoom. The ID is 420-777-8888 and you can find the password day of on @subcultureparty’s Instagram.
What: I’ve already written about That Kid, who makes bubbly Hyperpop. Even though he just put out a mixtape in April, America’s favorite twink is back with “Skater Boy.” The song is a maximalist ode to hitting on thrasher dudes at the skate park. Sonically it’s all rave synths, hiccuping vocals, and speedy tempos. It’s a candy colored blur that’s a lot to take in, and his release party promises to continue the sensory overload. Fellow buzzy acts Alice Gas (of “Rich Bitch Juice” fame) and Fraxiom (of “Thos Moser” fame) will be DJing, as well as the producer Petal Supply. Plus there’s a crew of alt influencers hosting. So throw a Hot Topic look on and clean off your webcams!!
How much: Free
and finally, a real life drag brunch
