Drag queen, Serena Tea, who will be recreating Beyonce’s “Video Phone” music video this week during Black Girl Magic
Hello Deviants!
Welcome to The Deviant Dispatch, your guide to events and culture that defy the norm.
The world continues to spiral through space! As NYC continues to open I’m seeing pop-up outlaw raves happening in Red Hook, massive block parties in Bed Sty, outdoor concerts in Ridgewood. This is all amongst news of the first day NYC had with no Covid-related deaths since March 11th, even as deaths and cases rise in other states.
Misinformation rages as new information comes to light. Theories about nefarious child trafficking rings appear alongside the latest scientific news. I’m not going to take a stance here on going out vs not going out. You’ll make your own decisions, like all deviants do. I’m just going to continue to keep listing worthy events until I die alone in a hospital room.
Not listed in this dispatch is the upcoming strike Monday July 20th. Essential workers across the country will walk out of their jobs to demand racial and economic justice at work. Keep your eye’s peeled for protests/actions you can take on Monday, or subscribe to the paid tier of this newsletter for more news on Friday.
Black Girl Magic
When: Wednesday, 9pm EST
Where: Twitch.tv/thevixenworld
What: The Vixen is the RuPaul’s Drag race queen who brought the fandom’s racism to the forefront of the conversation in 2018. She served colorful handmade garments and was unafraid to call out her white peers( Eureka O Hara, Aquaria). Before her time on the show, she started an all-black Chicago-based show call Black Girl Magic. Now it’s a country-wide showcase and is more important than ever. I’m especially excited to see Serena Tea re-create Beyonce and Lady Gaga’s “Video Phone” music video.

When: Saturday, 8pm EST
Where: baby.tv
What: Adult Mom is a indie rock band for tenderqueers. They haven’t released anything since their superb 2017 album Soft Spots (which I reviewed for the Le Sigh), partially because of all the drama of their formal label refusing to pay them.
Still, they make great tunes. This concrete with fellow underground indie-pop stars Remember Sports is a great excuse to cry while curled up on the couch.
