Hi Deviants,
Welcome to The Deviant Dispatch, your guide to culture that defies the norm. Looks like everyone is very much focused on defying the norms of white supremacy in America right now. We stan!!!
Remember last Friday when I defended looting? The issue has gotten a lot stickier. According to Buzzfeed, the pinnacle of norms, black protestor leaders are claiming that strange white people are getting violent against their wishes (possibly conservatives in disguise, or just people ready to blow). On the opposite side, we have this article from GQ about the precedent of violent protests leading to change. So like everything, it’s very complicated.
What we DO know is that protesting works, and to keep at it kiddos! They’re typically not announced to far in advance, but for my NYC deviants the instagram account @justiceforgeorgenyc posts protests every day. Some non-frontline options if the videos of tear-gas wielding police have you spooked:
1) make a banner to hang outside your apt window or car
2) donate to a local bail fund or community organization! Click here for a google doc full of places to support and resources for protestors.
Anyways, the virtual events landscape has dried up since everyone wants you to focus on The Cause (again, we stan). Eventually you will need need to blow off some steam. Do so at a local bar! Here are my fave Bushwick haunts doing cocktail service
The Rosemont 63 Montrose Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11206: Thurs-Sun, 3-9. Their frozen margs pack a wallop.
Boobie Trap 308 Bleecker St, Brooklyn, NY 11237: 2 to 8pm everyday. They’re offering 10 flavors of nutcrackers and other drinks as well.
La Lupe 9 Jefferson St, Brooklyn, NY 11206: 4-7p lots of different drinks and really good food!
I hope everyone stays safe out there. xoxoxo
