The Deviant Dispatch: Hope (?)
a Buffy tribute show, the first pride party of the season + more!
Hello Deviants!
Welcome to The Deviant Dispatch, your guide to culture that defies the norm. Today is Wednesday, which means I have a lineup of shows for the days ahead. As always, if you’re feeling the need to do something IRL, head to a protest! @justiceforgeorgenyc posts multiple locations every day on their instagram.
If you’re one of my paying subscribers (shoutout to the real ones!!!) you got news of the Brooklyn Liberation: An Action for Black Trans Lives last friday. It was a historic day this past Sunday, with around 15 thousand people in white marching for trans lives. The event was organized by Brooklyn’s very own West Dakota, who you may recognize from the pages of this newsletter. The whole affair gave me a rare glimpse of hope. Make sure you subscribe to the paid tier of this newsletter (only $5 a month) so you don’t miss a thing.
And now, this week’s schedule.
Shamir Live
When: Wednesday, 6pm EST
Where: @pitchfork on Instagram
What: Shamir, a musician who has been making homespun music for all of the 2010s. Starting with the sassy electro-pop of “On the Regular”, the fashionable non-binary performer has a new song “On My Own” . Watch him perform that and more tonight on Pitchfork
How much: free but …… buy something of Shamir’s
Black Girl Magic
When: Wednesday, 8pm CST
Where: twitch.tv/thevixensworld
What: The Vixen is the RuPaul’s Drag race queen who brought the fandom’s racism to the forefront of the conversation in 2018. She served colorful handmade garments and was unafraid to call out her white peers( Eureka O Hara, Aquaria). Before her time on the show even started, she started a all-black Chicago-based show call Black Girl Magic. Created in response to the racism she experienced in the gay scene in her home city of Chicago, the show has a STACKED lineup (look at all those names!!!) and is more important than ever.
How Much: tip the dolls
Home, Like No Place Is There: a Quarantine Emo night
When: Friday, 8pm to 2am EST
Where: Zoom, ask a emo kid for the ID
What: This edition of HLNPIT has Rolling Stone writer Brittany Spanos joining the DJs. A good chance to scream along to your fave angsty songs and witnessing others doing the same. Plus all the funds are going to the Trans Woman of Color Collective.
How Much: donate at least $10 to @fatherjohnmitski on Venmo
Be Cute + Bitch Nasty 7 Year Anniversary
When: Friday, 10pm EST - Late
Where: Zoom, 883 9067 8026
What: Be Cute is a long-running monthly queer dance party that has one of a consistently mixed crowd (gays, the Lena Dunham’s they call friends, even lesbians) and what it lacks in edgy tunes it makes up for in quality drag shows. Charlene is the host, who’s confrontational and hilarious presence one a mic is reason enough to go to a party. Their 7 year anniversary also has prime BK dolls like Babylove, Tyler Ashley, and Neon Calypso. Bitch Nasty is a Friday night lantix and pop party, so expect this function to have some of that flair. 100% of tips/donations go to Black Lives Matter.
How Much: $5-$20
The Buffy Hour: Once More With Distance
When: Saturday, 9pm EST
Where: twitch.tv/wussymag
What: A collection of queers celebrating the show Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Expect drag queens, costume recreations, several queer Buffy podcasters, singing demons, and comedians.
How Much: Suggested donation of $10 to @wussymag on Venmo to be split amongst artists.
Effy Presents: Monday Night Not Raw
When: Monday, 8pm EST
Where: https://www.twitch.tv/effylives
What: You may know professional wrestling networks like the WWE, but did you know that there’s a scrappy anti-corporate scene throwing down in bars and concert venues across the country? Effy is one of those independent wrestlers, a faggot in a magenta leather jacket covered in spikes who loves talking shit and showboating in the ring. In light of the inability for us to gather and watch people beat the shit out of each other, he’s taken to Twitch to showcase his playful personality. His Monday night wrestling commentary show is a great showcase of how accessible and campy the sport (?) can be.
How Much: Free, but if you attend and love the show consider becoming a paying subscriber to Effy’s Twitch.
