The Deviant Dispatch: H0L0's ambitious return
the art/performance venue has a new way to throw shows in the post-covid age
DJ and Icon Juliana Huxtable
Sup Deviants!!!
Welcome to another edition of The Deviant Dispatch: your guide to events and culture that defy the norm.
If you don’t listen to anything else I say, listen to this. JULIANA HUXTABLE HAS A NEW MIX OUT, and it is worth your time.
I don’t typically enjoy techno, but I always love Juliana Huxtable. A longtime fixture in the NYC art and nightlife worlds, Juliana Huxtable DJs music that sounds like a dystopian sci-fi movie. It’s the 5th Element, it’s Blade Runner, it’s the Matrix, it’s the our chaotic present.
It’s also the kind of music that one used to find at H0L0, who is throwing my fave event this week. I say fave just because of the ambition and creativity involved. If they pull this off we have a viable ways for venues to continue as the virus rages on. Scroll on to find out what I’m talking about and read about some other events happening this week.
Whatever World Order
When: Thursday, 8:00 pm EST
Where: 1090 Wykoff Avenue AND https://www.twitch.tv/h0l0_connect
What: The first of H0L0’s events post-Covid, the scrappy venue is throwing down some really innovative solutions. DJs and performers can create live streams in their back room. Fans can hang for drinks at the venue’s new sidewalk bar. Speakers on the street will stream what’s being played/performed in the back room so people can dance. The whole affair will stream online as well. It’s a fascinating combination of IRL and URL that has a lot of potential.
Which brings us to their kickoff event: Whatever World Order. Hosted by the fashion label Whatever 21, it’s a combination rave / clothing drive/ block party. Former congressional candidate and current rapper Paperboy Prince, DJ/Producer Jasmine Infinti, and rapper/producer PICTUREPLANE are among the many names performing. If you’re planning on going IRL you should get there early. Supposedly there’s “limited outdoor capacity with mandatory social distancing.”
The whole thing is a fundraiser for Clarity Care Network, who according to Whatever 21’s instagram “participate in mutual aid efforts of providing free herbal remedies, stocking community fridges, creating clothing bins for disenfranchised folks to be able to access necessities that the colonial system in place seeks to keep them from.” You’re supposed to bring clean/new/gently used clothing for them to use for this purpose.
How Much: free but donations accepted for Clairty Care Network.
Home, Like NoPlace Is There: Quarantine Emo Night
When: 8pm-1am EST
Where: Zoom ID 826 911 2476
What: A wholesome zoom night of emo and emo-adjacent tunes. My pal Tati really continues to stack these lineups. This week the Deviant Dispatch’s fave band Pom Pom Squad is showing up to DJ a set, alongside Poolblood (who I hadn’t heard of but upon first listen is sick!) Another guest DJ is Augusta Koch from Cayetana, a band that was once buzzy but now lives on through their cover of “Age of Consent (New Order)” that plays at my retail job. And there’s also a surprise guest!!! Last week it was the social media person behind the semi-viral Men’s Health Mag instagram account, so let’s hoping Tati ups the star power this time.
How Much: free but this one's benefitting NYC Nightlife United, a fund to help keep BIPOC nightlife establishments in business. Donations can be sent to @fatherjohnmitski on Venmo
MANEKA on Baby.tv
When: Saturday 8 PM EDT
Where: https://www.letswatchbabytv.online/
What: Brooklyn venue Baby’s All Right has been throwing live streams since this quar spiral began. Brooklyn-based guitarist and vocalist Devin McKnight, aka Maneka (pronounced “Monica”), is known for his work with the grungy indie rock group Speedy Ortiz. His own work bounces between math rock, metal, shoegaze, grindcore, hip-hop, and jazz. There are layers of twinkling and thunderous guitar, droning vocals, and occasional saxophone from McKnight’s virtuoso cousin Brent Birckhead. It will be interesting to see how McKnight will translate his album’s dense and rich sound to a live stream. Will he perform solo? Will his cousin join him? Perhaps a full band setup? Tune in to find out.
How Much: $5-50
Effy’s Monday Night Not Raw
When: Monday, 8pm EST
Where: https://www.twitch.tv/effylives
What: You may know professional wrestling networks like the WWE, but did you know that there’s a scrappy anti-corporate scene throwing down in bars and concert venues across the country? Effy is one of those independent wrestlers, a faggot in a magenta leather jacket covered in spikes who loves talking shit and showboating in the ring. In light of the inability for us to gather and watch people beat the shit out of each other, he’s taken to Twitch. His Monday night wrestling commentary show is a great showcase of how accessible and campy the sport (?) can be. Last week we watched some Japanese women wrestling (they dress like they go to shows at Market Hotel) and I got introduced to the 80s female wrestler Candy Divine.
How Much: Free, but if you attend and love the show consider becoming a paying subscriber to Effy’s Twitch.
That’s it for this dispatch. If you found this valuable consider forwarding this email to a pal! If you’re the pal please subscribe! I write twice a week: once about upcoming worthy events (for free subscribers) and once about worthy subjects of my choosing (for paying members). If you care about Drag Queens, illegal concerts, Charli XCX, revolution, and John Waters, you’ll definitely want to read The Deviant Dispatch.
