Hello Deviants,
Welcome to The Deviant Dispatch, your guide to events and culture that defy the norm.
In low key stakes news, the Hyperpop debate rages on as more and more key players in the “scene” come out against the name.
In honor of that, here’s a playlist i made of thee people who hate being called Hyperpop but nonetheless are being grouped together by the label. Feel free to listen as you take a gander at these upcoming events.
As always, stay tuned for my dispatch Friday on the the sexual assault allegations sweeping the DIY rock scene. Of course, that’s only for my paying subscribers. If that’s not you yet
If I get to 300 paying subscribers I can leave my retail job and do this full time.
Toodles!

Low Heat X Discakes Collab
When: Friday 6pm New York Time (will I adopt this synonym for EST along with Discakes? stay tuned)
Where: Zoom, RSVP for the link
What: if anyone can bring the excitement back to online raving it’s Discakes. The young queer BIPOC nightlife collective has one of the most exhaustive approaches to safer spaces I’ve ever seen. The result, alongside programming that features the best talent currently bubbling up in NYC, are the best raves you’ll find. They rang in the new year by partying in a chinatown strip mall, and now they’re partnering with Boiler Room. For those who don’t know, recording a Boiler Room set is milestone for any techno-adjacent DJ. Boiler Room hosts DJs sets online via their Youtube channel. Since it’s an institution the comments are often riddled with boring unoriginal techno bros complaining the mixing isn’t very good. That’s why this partnership is so exciting: it cements the Discakes DJs as worthy of wider acclaim, and shows that while the Boiler Room has a past, they are looking forward toward the future of nightlife.
How Much: free but all donations will go to @glits_inc and the amazing work they are doing globally for black and brown trans people.
When: 5:30 til???
Where: depends on the time, see flyer for details
What: shitty flyer, great cause. Also like, show Portland that NYC is still out here. wear a mask, bring water and hand sanitzer, go with a buddy. Like, go TOGETHER don’t try and meet up there. It’s possible there might be so many people marching that it’s hard to find your friends.
How much: free
Spirit World
When: the 23, 24, 25th
Where: https://www.twitch.tv/imvuofficial
What: a 3 day fest streaming on Twitch organized the BK electronic dou Spirit Twin. Twitch has thankfully grown beyond being a place to watch dudes playing video games to a post-Covid playground for the rave and drag scenes. This fest is decidedly on the rave side, with a tinge of *whispers* hyperpop
energy. Below you’ll find the breakdowns by day.
Day 1
When: Thursday
Where: Where: https://www.twitch.tv/imvuofficial
What: we have the tera nova stage, which will be more noisy and harsh. Local faves Deli Girls and LUSTSICKPUPPY will be tearing it up. The Sirius stage looks to be a little less sonically confrontational, although with rapper Cakes Da Killa headlining anything could happen.
How Much: free
Day 2
When: Friday
Where: https://www.twitch.tv/imvuofficial
What: Pussy Riot have been in the news for years, but SONIKKU is who I’m really excited to see. The producer’s new songs with singer LIZ are bops. If both of these acts and their cohort on the Spirit City Stage aren’t your flavor, cleanse your pallet at the Ambient Forrest stage.
Day 3
When: Saturday
Where: https://www.twitch.tv/imvuofficial
What: The angels Cowgirl Clue and Hannah Diamond will be headlining this evening and I’m really looking forward to TBH. I need some light and energy in my life STAT. This is also a chance to catch the festival organizers Spirit Twin. They’ll all be performing at the Heaven’s Gate stage, but if you want a change of pace head to thee Rave Cave stage.
