God Complex and Pinwheel, who will reunite at Supermodels this Wednesday
Hi you cool newts and lizards,
Welcome to The Deviant Dispatch. I’m Mo, your guide to the underground world of Brooklyn and beyond. On Wednesday I write about events for free. On Friday I write about gossip for money (paying members only). Today’s Wednesday, so (duh) I have some events for you! and NO I DID NOT WATCH THE DEBATES, because I already know I’m voting for Joe Biden because I don’t have a choice.
If you hear of an illegal rave or backyard punk show and it wasn’t from me, email me @ thedeviantdispatch@gmail.com. And if you’re a subscriber who’s only on the free tier, subscribe to the paid tier below to actually support me! If I get enough paying subs I can do this full time (the dream). At the very least, give this newsletter a share!
xoxoxo
Mo
Supermodels: 80s Prom
When: Thursday 7pm-11pm
Where: 3 Dollar Bill, but you need to Venmo $15 to @rys-presents to get on the list
What: This newest weekly drag party is really bringing out the dolls. There’s almost as many performers as Bushwig (scroll down for that info). If the dynamic duo of local celebrity songstress Crystal Mesh and lip sync assassin Neon Calypo weren’t already enough, this week has the clownish tornado Pinwheel Pinwheel, the satanesque stud God Complex, and the punky sex siren Jette Grey all making appearances.
Honestly though, the two main hosts are all you need. At the first Supermodel the crowd bid on what song the duo should perform, with the winning bidder selecting “WAP.” Madness ensued as Neon Calypso nailed every word, while Crystal Mesh flopped about on a patrons table like a wine-drunk housewife at a bar mitzvah. My chest hurt from screaming and laughing.
How much: $15 dollars
Around The Campfire S3 ep1
When: Friday October 2
Where: online, RSVP for the link
What: If you’re one of the people reading this who are taking the recent NYC spike of Covid cases seriously, here’s a virtual event for you! Every Friday the indie rock band Long Neck is hosting a live stream concert. This is the first one of the month of October, and features the sunny pop of Honey Cutt and the bouncy flouncy hip-hop of Billy Dean Thomas.
How much: Free but tip this struggling content creators *ahem* I mean musicians
Pinc Clouds, Clara Joy + more @ Tompkins
When: Saturday, 1 to 8pm
Where: Tomkins Square park
What: I used to pass Claudi of Pinc Louds all the time as she played on the F train platform at Essex street. It was 2015, and I would have never guessed that I’d still be seeing her playing in colorful grandma dresses years later, or that her band would get 1 million streams on Spotify, but here we are! This show is totally unlawful and will also feature a performance by the folk singer Clara Joy (if you don’t know here’s a past issue of The Deviant Dispatch for you to read). Expect underground music fans of all ages!!
How much: totally free
Bushwig
When: Saturday 4-7pm
Where: Maria Hernandez Park
What: The third Bushwig celebration of the pandemic, but the first that’s an outright party not a protest. All the fest’s fave drag performers (Charlene, Chiquitita, Merrie Cherry, Rify Royalty, ect) will be giving shows in the park to the queers and the questioning people walking by. Hannah Lou (longtime Bushwig helper) and Babes (co-founder of the festival) will also be DJing. Peep the full lineup here.
It remains to be seen how large the crowd will swell. Past Bushwigs this summer filled the far larger Mcarren park, so this might totally overtake Maria Hernandez. It also will be interesting to see how dressed the attendees will be. Normally Bushwig is a moment for you to come in full regalia like Comic Con, but this outdoor daytime fest might yield a more casual crowd. Either way, bring masks get ready to spiral!
How much: free to walk into the park but bring cash to tip or Venmo the girls
That’s it for this dispatch. If you liked it please consider forwarding this email to a pal! If you’re the pal please subscribe.
