Nightlife is The Only Thing Giving Me Hope
The world is really rough but going out can still transcend this horrid reality.
The Mx Nobody contestant STACI, who will be competing at Purgatory this Saturday.
Hello fellow Americans considering fleeing the country,
It’s Mo AKA DJ Gay Panic and this(!) is The Deviant Dispatch. I keep a faggoty ear to the ground, delivering you the latest news on NYC’s greatest underground parties, rock shows, and ACTUAL raves- every fuckin’ week. Plus you’ll get it-girl gossip, cultural speculation, snark, typos, and lots of Charli XCX updates. To throw me some much-needed support, become a paying subscriber, share this with someone, or hit the heart button at the top of the post!
I’ll be honest dear readers: it was pretty hard to come up with the gumption to write this week. As the world continues to spiral it’s been getting harder and harder to justify writing about cool parties and underground music. Who cares about that stuff with the rising Covid rates, mass shootings in two weeks, Monkey pox, a possible recession, ongoing war, AND the Supreme Court deciding they’re going to overturn Roe v. Wade! When podcaster who told an Infowars reporter “you people have, like, worms in your brains, honestly” cheerily poses with Alex Jones himself and emerges with her it-girl status untainted, you start to worry that even underground heroes will succumb to the only philosophical option left: nihilism.
Why write about these “scene” people or underground culture at all? Because when I was in a funk last night I went to MTHR TRSA and Brenda’s show What’s Happening and managed to laugh my ass off. The show was drag meets performance art, featuring gags about wet hair, corporate pride sponsorships, and a running diaper fetish theme. During the hour runtime, I forgot all about war, violence, and the discourse. It was brilliant, and that’s the kind of relief that a good event can grant you. So while the world continues to burn, I’m going to continue pointing out the kikis that can give us the strength to keep going. Sorry for being earnest!
some assorted news
By the time you read this Sky Ferreira will have put out another single.
Alex Chapman’s single is less good than the Tiktok snippet promised, but that didn’t stop everyone at the recent party SKSKSKS from singing along when he DJ’d it.
Did you know that Peggy Gou, house music/style icon in the making, remixed the biggest Kylie Minogue song? You’re welcome.
While I was out of town Brooklyn experienced it’s first summer day. This predictably prompted the queers to flock to Riis beach for the first time this year. The beach is known as a increasingly popular alternative to The Rockaways due to a renovated snack bar, but queers have been congregating on the beach for decades. Nowadays you can find the encampments of various LGBTs in front of the abandoned mental hospital, smoking weed and blaring music from various Bluetooth speakers. Is the water clean and beautiful? Is it the ambience relaxing? Hardly. The chaotic scene resembles a row of Bushwick rooftop parties on New Years Eve without the distance between buildings.

That’s it for me this week girls. Make sure you subscribe to the paid tier of the newsletter to get the tea on all the upcoming pride parties.
XOXO

What: The Mx Nobody Pageant is a semi-legendary 4 week contest. Created by The Nobodies — a kooky collective founded by Ariel Italic, Lady Bearica Andrews, and DJ Accident Report (who taught me how to DJ) — this competition is loosely centered on drag with an emphasis on celebrating outsiders and people who mix performance disciplines. Past entries have included drag, burlesque, live singing, puppetry, and acts that defy genre. Winners and contestants from this performance art competition have gone on to become beloved fixtures in NYC’s nightlife ecosystem and have established themselves as successful artists and performers in their own fields. Pinwheel Pinwheel is designing epic couture for prominent figures like Bob the Drag Queen. Kandy Muse has gone on to international renown in the drag community.
I’m one of the organizers this year so it would mean a lot if you could attend. : )
