Hey you hip happening bitches,
This is The Deviant Dispatch. I’m Mo, your guide to the underground. I write about NYC-based events, gay shit, and cool kid gossip. There will be snark, typos, and lots of Charli XCX updates. If you like what you see, become a paying subscriber, share this with someone, or hit the heart button at the top of the post.
While everyone has been squawking over the 10 minute Taylor Swift song, I’ve been basking in a sound bath of the alternative music. There’s a lot of good stuff coming out right now (as well as some duds I won’t mention). Here’s a brief guide to what’s worth your time.
In warped electronic pop news we have three new fab releases to consider:
The new Sega Bodega album Romeo.
The new Tama Gucci album Almost Blue
The new Arca songs “Prada” and “Rakata”
The band Yucky Duster is putting out new music after a long absence. “Are we back? Not quite! Are we thrilled to share these tunes? Yes!” the band wrote in the description for their song “Grump” which you can watch above. They were building quite the following for their barbershop choir take on ramshackle indie rock and their tight live shows before abruptly halting operations in 2018. If you like “Grump”, they have a new album titled III on all the platforms.
The band Customer played their first show opening for Chastity Belt and already have a lot going for them. The group comprises of members from LVL UP and Maneka, and their playing reflected this pedigree. The band is equally adept at covering droll post punk territory a la Dry Cleaning or soaring melodic territory a la the Buzzcocks. Conveniently, they cover “Ever Fallen In Love (With Someone You Shouldn’t Fallen In Love With)” but managed to draw an equal amount of enthusiasm from the crowd for their original songs. “We only had two songs wrote when we accepted this gig” the bass player said. Let it be known that the Deviant Dispatch is hoping for many more songs! No music out yet, so catch them live Jan 21st at The Broadway and follow them on Instagram for updates.
That concludes your homework for this week. Be sure to reply to this email with your thoughts on these artists and let me know who I’ve missed. I’m going to be perfecting my Mac and Cheese recipe, but below are some events you might see me venture out for.
XOXO
Mo
Galactik
When: Thursday
Where: Nowadays
What: The last time Deli Girls played a Discakes party it was in 2019, before the trans + BIPOC-centered organization got into the habit of teaming up with Club Carry. The two orgs, led by founders Pauli Cakes and Ant Puke, have become the go-to party throwers for alt genderqueer ravers in post-pandemic Brookyln. This space-themed party has them teaming up with the aforementioned Deli Girls, rapper BBY Africka, fellow DJ Princess Peggie, and more at the venue Gawker once called “The Most Radioactive Place in New York City”
How much: $15-$50
Empath Live @ Baby’s All Night
When: Friday
Where: Baby’s All Right
What: Philedelphia’s best noise-punk band that’s secretly twee is coming into town. Don’t miss your chance to mosh to tunes like “Soft Shape” and also trip out during the atmospheric interludes between songs.
How much: $13 in advance, $15 at the door
Don’t Go In There, Uma! It’s A Trap.
When: Friday
Where: Satellite Art Club
What: There are plenty of bars in Brooklyn that claim to be “art spaces” but this one has the real art world connections and selective eye to make it feel like a gallery. This Friday it’s getting an injection of arty drag with a horror-themed show about Uma Thurman happening in the venue’s basement. Expect a dada sense of humor.
How much: $10 suggested donation
HAIRY: America’s Next Top Mustache
When: Saturday
Where: All Night Skate
What: I’m fully biased (I am DJing at this show that my boyfriend is co-hosting) but I really think this will be iconic! The second mic is the fabulous club kid Suburbia! We have a go-go dancer dressed as a bull! Performance artist, poet, and personal friend Candy Store is doing a two-part Jamie Lee Curtis tribute! Most importantly, we are running a pageant competiton for Best Mustache with a $100 cash prize!
How much: No cover but tip the queens and buy drinks.
Ghost Piss EP Release
When: Sunday, 8pm
Where: The Broadway
What: Ghost Piss is the musical moniker of singer/producer River. She makes all her beats on the Roland MC 505 drum machine, and her songs have a charming homespun quality while reaching for a sense of magic. This show is her EP release, and is a must-see for fans of DIY pop.
How much: $10
