If You're Vaccinated, Go To (These) Parties
I'm back from my hiatus and I want you to get back out there
me coming out of a hiatus
Hello my lovelies,
This is The Deviant Dispatch. I’m Mo, your guide to the underground. I write about NYC-based events, gay shit, and cool kid gossip. There will be snark, typos, and lots of Charli XCX updates. If you like what you see, become a paying subscriber, share this with someone, or hit the heart button at the top of the post.
It’s been a while but I’m back! Here’s a brief catch up on the happenings in the 2 months I’ve been gone:
every venue that shut down during the omicron wave reopened
MTHR TRSA alleged that 3 Dollar Bill failed to charge people at the door for Hole Pics this Sunday night, meaning that one of their largest shows had one of the smallest payouts. Fortunately the venue agreed to recoup some of the money they lost.
The club Bossa Nova shut down after the apartment above went up in flames. There’s (of course) a GoFundme for repairs that’s currently 1/3 completed.
Charli XCX came out as a Red Scare fan and had Dasha Nekrosova on her podcast
Charli XCX also put out the best single of her album rollout so far, the sublime “Beg for You” with Rina Sawayama, which is an answer song to September’s “Cry For You”.
Fans of kooky performance art queens found themselves a champion on season 14 of Rupaul’s Drag Race with Willow Pill.
secretive new party called MORE debuted, commenting on the severe lack we’ve been feeling.
Grimes put out a single that referenced the anime Death Note. It’s a slow grower but has a hypnotic power.
Grimes Charli XCX and Sky Ferraa might be re-creating this iconic V magazine cover.
FKA Twigs dropped a mixtape Caprisongs, which is an excellent lovemaking soundtrack.
THOTYSSEY published their list of 300 nightlife people you need to know and predictably drew ire from those included. People were peeved at the ways they were described, as well as placement of problematic nightlife titans like Linux, Susanne Bartsch, and Ladyfag high on the list.
Macy Rodman shot some cute pics for Paper
The show Euphoria returned and sparked my obsession with Chloe Cherry,
the column Talkhole moved to Gawker
Downtown it-girl and actress Julia Fox started a very fake-looking relationship with Kanye West. I have expansive thoughts (especially on her eyeliner) but for those you need to subscribe to the paying tier of this newsletter. The essay is currently titled Julia Fox, Downtown, and Selling Out. It’ll be out this week.
That’s more or less anything, but enough with the past, it’s time for the future! The wild wilderness of NYC nightlife is sprouting all kinds of flowers. For any nervous nellies who are feeling reticent from this most recent Covid wave, here are some scientifically-backed words of comfort: Remember back in early 2020 when people kept saying “isn’t coronavirus just the flu?” Well now for vast majority of people who are vaccinated, Covid-19 is basically just the flu again. If you’ve been one of the people saying to “believe science” the science is telling that you go back to your life girl! These following events are Deviant Dispatch approved, and great excuses to get out there and start getting over those anxieties. It’s been a hard 2 years, but right now it doesn’t look like it has to be a hard third.
XOXO,
Mo
p.s. I’ll be back next week with a full calendar of valentines day weekend festivities, but that’ll only be for the paying subscribers, so become a paying subscriber.
Dorian Electra, Siouxxie, Lust$ickPuppy LIVE
When: Feb 1,2
Where: Music Hall of Williamsburg
What: Gender clown and experimental pop star Dorian Electra has become a patron saint of TikTok alterna-teens. Their 2020 album My Agenda was like if Charli XCX’s Pop 2 was made by Linkin Park, and their tour continues that tradition of taking along plenty of freaks for the ride. The New York leg features the rapper and noise/rave aficionado Lut$ickpuppy and gothy glitchy trap Siouxxe.
How much: $25+
Octo Octa, Eris Drew
When: 10:00PM Friday, Saturday
Where: Good Room
What: House music extraordinaire Octo Octa is hosting a rave for the people who like serious electronic music. It should be a serious good time.
How much: $60 + 7.50 fee
A. Savage, My Idea LIVE
When: Friday, 8pm
Where: TV EYE, the coolest rock venue in Brooklyn
What: This is a bill whose star power might not be visible at first glance. Casual modern rock/indie/punk fans might recognize A. Savage’s main band Parquet Courts. Their droll yet driving ditties are earning the band a worldwide audience. My Idea is a supergroup from 2 rising indie pop acts. We have Lily Konigsburg, who scores profiles based on her solo work and her freewheeling band Palberta. We also have Nate Amos, whose band Water From Your Eyes has become a certifiable buzz band. Their pop partnership My Idea is some of their most accessible work yet, and if there’s any justice will soon be as big as their other projects.
How much: $20
SKSKSKS
When: Friday, 10pm
Where: H0L0
What: It’s a season of returns. I’m back writing the newsletter, H0L0 is back open with some reservations, and SKSKSKS is bringing Uffie back from the indie sleaze era with their first party of the year.
I guess the party isn’t entirely to blame. Uffie AKA miss “pop the glock” started releasing singles again in 2018. But the era people know her from was a decade prior, where her songs with various members of the Paris DJ crew Ed Banger records were all over Myspace. She was a posh yet foul-mouthed MC with a chirpy voice who insisted you had to take her seriously even though her rapping skills was negligible. Now, post-Iggy Azealia, such a shtick is tired, and Uffie has been putting out tender idiosyncratic pop songs like “cool” “drugs.” While none have reached the ubiquity of her song with Justice or the sheer thrill of “Ready to Uff” she nonetheless commands a respect of those in the know. At SKSKSKS she’ll be DJing as well as performing a couple of songs live.
A underground star from a past era isn’t all SKSKSKS has in store. In addition to DJs/producers Count Baldor (bonkers!), Diveo (bubbly!), and promoter THELIMITDOESNOTEXIST, there will be live performances by current underground pop star Miss Madeline and hyperpop eccentric Alice Longyu Gao.
How much: $30
S.C.A.B. + Activity at TV EYE
When: Saturday 7:30pm (but I bet the music wont start till 8:30)
Where: TV Eye, (again) the coolest rock venue in Brooklyn
What: If the stocks are falling and the crime is rising, why not celebrate the disorder with dash of noisy post-punk? Activity are a supergroup of sorts, with members from Field Mouse and Russian Baths. Openers Lip critic mix in some electronic elements into their thrash and S.C.A.B. bring a slightly sunnier sound to the stage.
How much: $15
BOY RADIO PRESENTS: RENT, A SHADOWCAST
When: Saturday, 6pm- 10pm
Where: 3 Dollar Bill
What: “Real life’s getting more like fiction each day” Roger sings in the opening song of RENT, and I can’t think of a better way to summarize the 2020s so far. Producer Boy Radio, who also casts killer Rocky Horror Picture Show shadow castings, has put together a cast of Brooklyn scene kids to lipsync their way through the movie RENT. The highlights of the cast is Charlene as the uninhibited performance artist Maureen. Other notable figures are DJ, showgirl, and model Maya Margarita playing the role of 19 year old drug addled Mimi, and ballroom star Spindarella playing the drag-queen/drummer Angel.
How much: $30, but maybe it’ll be like Hole Pics (allegedly) and the door person at 3 Dollar Bill will forget to make you pay
