Sherry Poppins, Cynde Cexxx, and Qhrist Almighty at my birthday party
Hi girlies,
This is The Deviant Dispatch. I’m Mo, your guide to the underground. I write about NYC-based events, gay shit, and cool kid gossip. There will be snark, typos, and lots of Charli XCX updates. If you like what you see, become a paying subscriber, share this with someone, or hit the heart button at the top of the post.
Did you miss me? I’ve missed you. There’s no one in my life to share gossipy updates with (except for friend of the newsletter Candy Store). I managed to have a lovely time away nonetheless. I turned 30 and threw an epic birthday party at All Night Skate. I frolicked through the mountains of Puerto Rico. I interviewed the Russian drag artist Gena Marvin for Paper Magazine. But I wouldn’t be complete without the newsletter, and I’m sure you missed my voice every week in the inbox. “What am I missing?” you wondered. Well here I am to tell you:
The Delta variant is in full swing here in NYC, but aside from the girls with cases going into self-isolation, the scene continues to churn forward.
Queer punk band Special Interest and indie rockers Pom Pom Squad have cancelled their fall tours over Delta related concerns, even thought Pom Pom Sqaud just announced they will be playing the music festival Firefly
Azealia Banks is in the midst of a 4 date residency at Webster Hall. The rapper has really been ‘in her bag’ as the kids say for these shows. We’re talking choreography, custom outfits, the whole 9 yards.
The Bushwig lineup was announced. You can check the entire list of names on their website but here are some key performers: hyperpop artists Alice Longyu Gao and Alice Gas, comedian/vocalist Chase Icon, rapper Quay Dash, and Dragula stars Biqtch Puddin, Louisiana Purchase and The Boulet Brothers.
Ladyfag is throwing a music festival the same weekend and the lineup is…..less stacked. Aside from Caroline Polacheck and the random star power of Christina Aguilera headlining, there’s not much curbside appeal.
Downtown vintage boutique James Veloria has a new space with twice the room
The club House of Yes is open again.
Ridgewood rock venue Bar Freeida has suspended shows due to a noise complaint.
Macy Rodman released her incredible album Unbelievable Animals
Water From Your Eyes released their incredible album Structure
Chiquitita has continued to book quality drag shows at C’mon Everybody, including a Chromatica tribute show.
Someone threw a brick through the window of C’mon Everybody, which was interpreted as a homophobic attack. Fortunately the money was raised for a new window in a matter of days.
Phew!
Ok now that we’ve covered general news, we have to discuss Charli XCX. Our girl is BUSY in preparation for her 5th album.
She’s released one song called “Out Out” with the rapper Saweetie and two DJs I’ve never heard of before: Jax Jones and Joel Corry. It’s basically Charli singing over Stromae’s 2010 global hit “Alors on Danse” and is fun despite being formulaic.
She’s is about to release a new song called “Good Ones” Sept 2 that sounds like a Dua Lipa B-side from Future Nostalgia. This is not necessarily a good thing.
She’s about to release a remix of Lady Gaga’s “911” Sept 3.
She’s tweeted a date (March 18th 2022) that we’re assuming is the date of the next album
She’s also launched a podcast called Best Song Ever where she interviews people like Ziwe and Christine and the Queens about their favorite songs for various situations.
Ok now that you’re all caught up, here’s what’s popping this labor day weekend. Our day celebrating workers (at least the ones lucky enough to have 9-5 jobs) has long been a party weekend. While most of the key movers and shakers will be heading out of town to idyllic locals, I’ve got an itinerary for those sticking it out in the city.
Xoxo
Mo
Hole Pics: Fashion Weak
When: Today, Wednesday 7pm
Where: 3 Dollar Bill
What: Mthr Thrsa’s monthly drag show tackles the world of fashion, including the cofounder of the brand Syro cosplaying as Anna Wintour.
How much: $10
Water From Your Eyes Record Release
When: Thursday, 7pm
Where: Purgatory
What: The first IRL show post-pandemic from my booking collective Booked By Grandma is a record release show for Water From Your Eyes. The experimental indie pop/post-punk dou have assembled a bill of fellow eccentrics to celebrate. The venue is a loft above a bar with a cutesy neon-hued aesthetic that comes off like the DIY venues of Brooklyn past.
How much: $10 in advance, $15 at the door.
QWAM, Haybaby, Oceanator, b3cca @ Rippers
When: Friday, 6pm
Where: Rippers, Rockaway
What: QWAM, Haybaby, Oceanator are all bands of the indie and punk persuasion. For my feminist readers, they’re all bands dominated by women and non-binary people, which twists this free beach show from another dudefest into something far more special. Identity politics aside, a good bill is a good bill.
How much: Free
Club Eat
When: Saturday
Where: location tba.
What: Another project of the producer Chicken (who’s behind Ziwe’s “Stop Being Poor” and Miss Madeline’s “Bad Girls”). The dou will be performing somewhere on Saturday, and while I don’t have anymore tea you SHOULD follow them for more.
How much: ???
Hester Street Fair
When: Sept 4th & 5th, 11 am to 6 pm
Where: NOT Hester street, Pier 17 89 South Street.
What: This fair has been making a name for itself since 2010. Buisnesses like Kopitiam and Partybus Bakeshop, got their start at the fair before graduating to brick-and-mortar locations. After the co-op board declined the review their 10-year lease at the park, the fair has moved to the South Street Seaport. Far less cool of a location, but I’m turning up to see the fair in action.
How much: free to attend, prices vary on stuff
