Hello!
Now that the virus, who I’ve started calling Miss Roni, has gotten me off work (with pay🙌🏻) it’s finally time to start something I’ve been toying with for a while: starting a newsletter!!!
Most of you are probably familiar with my journalism work( if not go here for a taste). I tend to cover alternative culture with a focus on queer shit. The fag in me just jumps out!! It’s tough finding (paid) jobs w/o a masters degree and a wealth of self-esteem for having pitches rejected. Recently this has led me to slow down on writing, but in these circumstances, it’s time to pick her back up again!
There are so many great shows, musicians, artists that I still want to showcase (the only reason I got into journalism) which brings me to The Deviant Dispatch!!1!!! I’m envisioning it to be bi-weekly newsletter exposing cultural events and works that ~Deviate~ from the norm. This could be cuz they’re structurally at odds with the mainstream or just too new to have reached it yet. It’s free for now but after the first month, I’m gonna be asking for $5 a month.
On Tuesday there will be an email of upcoming events around Brooklyn and occasionally elsewhere. While this virus rages this will function as a collection of live-streams. More and more are popping up so email me (mowritesome@gmail.com) if you see one you think I’d like!
On Saturday there will be some 500-800 word missive on a cultural maker/object/blah blah that I think is interesting. This will be either a brand new thing or an old thing I find freshly interesting.
Anyway below you’ll find the first roundup of events/live-streams! Thanks for subscribing! Wash your hands!!!
Left Bank Live - Virtual Music Festival
When: Today-Sunday
Where: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC6m8nEL0cjPd6isBaNF8lww?
What: the online publication Left Bank Magazine is throwing a virtual festival for the next 5 days with lots of bands, DJs, and poets for your pleasure. The lineup is too long to list here, so I’m just going to add a pic.
I’d pay special attention to Top Nachos, who are playing Saturday at 4. The goofy BK two-piece always serves up optimistic punk energy. Check out their NPR tiny desk submission to get an idea of the ruckus they can create. Hopefully, they find a way to inject cheese into our veins via webcam!!! Miss Roni won’t stand a chance. In theory Ridgewood shredders Ash Jesus will play the evening of 3/22 but a little bird told me travel problems might make that impossible. 😓 Stay tuned to see if they make it and buy their tunes on Bandcamp for an Alt-rock Janis Joplin energy.
How Much: free but VENMO the ARTISTS!!!!!
Oops! (Social Distancing Edition)
When: Wednesday 10pm EST
Where: Instagram live, likely @oopstagrampt
What: The best weekly drag show Oops! (which I covered in depth for Bushwick Daily) was the first BK party to announce a Livestream version. Join Juku and West Dakota for shows and shenanigans. I‘ve seen Juku pull dollars out of her asshole onstage, so there’s no telling what these girls have in store for us. See you in the Livestream chat!
How much: Free to watch but you should Venmo tips to @oopsgirls
Digital Drag Show
When: Friday 7pm EST
Where: twitch.tv/biqtchpuddin
What: Bitch Puddin, Dragula winner and trash diva, hosts what’s being billed as “the first Digital Drag Show” even though Charlene Incarnate and Tyler Ashley already did a live stream of their Baby Tea Brunch this past Sunday. This definitely has the biggest lineup of any drag show so far. Queens include Alaska Thunderfuck, Juno Birch, and this year’s Dragula winner Landon Cider. BK’s own Juku, Astrid, and Candy Muse will also be performing.
How Much: $10 suggested donation.
