Deviant Dispatch: the final Oops and the first Princess
plus a wine-fueled night of #awkwardgirl comedy
Hello fellow deviants! (or should I call you cool cats and kittens?)
Welcome to the Deviant Dispatch, your Brooklyn-based guide to culture that defies the norm. It’s Tuesday, so its time for another lineup of events for when you’re done binging Tiger King on Netflix. For added film/tv/fashion/music recommendations become a paying reader of Deviant Dispatch by clicking here. This Friday I’ll be talking about a new mixtape of faggot pop perfection and what’s on my loungewear wishlist. Don’t mIss OUtTTTTtt!!!!!
Okay, on with the dispatch.
Club Quarantine
When: Every night, 9-12:00 EST
Where: Zoom, check @clubquarantine on Instagram at 9pm EST for the code
What: Club Quarantine is a queer-centric dance party. The whole appeal is dancing in front of everyone on Zoom, where you can click through the users dancing, sipping, and strutting.
Much like the real club, you only get as much out of Club Quarantine as you put into it. Do you log n wth a fly outfit on, ready to show off and dance? You’ll have a ball. Are you logging in halfheartedly to sit, look at other people, and drink? You’ll be bored. Past DJs include alt-pop star Charli XCX and mixmasters like Venus X and Chippy Nonstop.
How Much: Free
Post World Rado: every night
When: around 1pm to 1am EST but times are subject to change
Where: @post_world_radio2 on Instagram
What: Curated by Instagram users @ahyoka222 & @smallbounty199, this Instagram is one of the most ambitious I’ve seen. Featuring freaks gathered from NYC, Philadelphia, and who knows where else, Post World Radio live streams performances all hours of the day. You can head to their Instagram to check out the day’s schedule, which in the past has included performances by the Deli Girls, Wiki, and the dance duo SCRAAATCH. The chaotic programming and lo-fi aesthetic def feels right for the wreckage of our world right now. Be warned, this is off-the-wall kinda shit. They’re already on their second account after the first one was shut down by Instagram (probs for copyrighted music or nudity).
How Much: free but TiP the performers and curators
Cabernet Cabret
When: Wednesday at 8pm EST
Where: @catccohen on Instagram live
What: Catherine Cohen is one of the best comedians out right now. The standup star also has a musical side to her. BQ (that’s before quarantine) she had a weekly cabaret show at Club Cumming. Now it’s digital, so tune in with a bottle of rose ready. Be careful not to spit wine all over your loungewear. Watch her perform her song “Look at me” if you need convincing.
How Much: free
Oops (final virtual one!!!!)
When: Wednesday at 10pm EST
Where: Either @iamwestdakota, @harajukubk, or @itmagenta on Instagram.
What: This is the last virtual Oops according to the queens, which is a shame. It was the only drag show fully taking advantage of Instagram live’s a unique setup. What started as a goofy drag show in Brooklyn is now pioneering what digital drag looks like. You’ll get all the glamour from other drag queen’s shows but with a twist. Expect lots of split-screen shenanigans and unexpected camera angles. Keep your eyes on the comments as well. Some of the funniest things at Oops are what the audience says.
How Much: free but you’ll wanna venmo @oopsgirls
PRINCESS
When: Thursday 9pm EST
Where: twitch.tv/princess4evr
What: PRINCESS is a San Francisco-based party, and this virtual one is a benefit fo the SF gay bar Stud. The lineup is expansive. You can catch BK faves Harajuku and Shanita Bump performing here as well. Horrorchatta, the queen of Bushwig, will be giving a rare live show. Hollow Eve from LA and Dragula is performing. They’re known to staple shit to their face and pull at the skin, so who knows what will happen here. The Alien beauty, Ishe Hungry, will also be giving shows.
How Much: $10 suggested donation to help the Stud.
Digital Drag Show 3.0
When: Friday 10pm EST
Where: twitch.tv/biqtchpuddin
What: Biqtch Puddin has made her Twitch show a weekly affair. This is good, as the Dragula winner is seamlessly mixing big names in alternative drag with well-deserving up and comers. This week’s edition has Bronx beauty Serena Tea (of viral fame) who’s always good for a gag. The rapper Big Dipper will also perform. The full lineup is in the video below
The barrage of different skillsets and production values can be dizzying. One queen might writhe on her bed while another will dance through a full stage production. Others send in pre-recorded videos. Sometimes you can hear the queens urgently whisper to helpers off-camera. The best way to take it all in is pull of Twitch on a laptop and connect it to a TV. Chaotic drag theatre awaits.
How Much: $10 suggested donation.
Sunday’s Best: a drag Sermon
When: Sunday 4pm EST
Where: @juniormintt on Instagram
What: Junior Mint is one of my favorite new drag performers right now. She’s got defined aesthetic, rocking braids with balloons attached. Her performances are similarly unique. Junior Mint’s numbers combine classic balladry with humorous monologues about trans rights, capitalism, and whiteness. She describes her new Sunday show as a place where “We’ll laugh, we’ll feel positive, but most importantly, you’ll learn something.” Sign me up!
How Much: Free but TiP
Tossed Salad
When: Sunday 8pm EST
Where: @brigittebidet on Instagram 8pm
What: Brigitte is a Atlanta-based queen who’s beauty is underscored by her potty humor. A long time pal of Violet Chachki, she’s one of the king pillars of alternative Atlanta drag. Tune in to see what the modern queer south looks like.
How Much: Free but TiP YoUR QUEENS
Makeup Mawmday with Angelica Sundae
When: Monday 9pm EST
Where: @angelicasundae on Instagram.
What: Angelica Sundae, Brooklyn’s Dead Vegas Showgirl, is dong a makeup challenge with a different queen each Monday. They’ll have 30 mins to finish the same makeup look. That’s not a lot of time! Then we vote on the winner. A fun experiment to keep your Monday’s a little interesting.
