Deviant Dispatch: Queer Telethon Edition
plus the return of Snack Theatre and What's Happening?!?
Hello Deviants,
Welcome to Deviant Dispatch, your guide to culture that defies the norm. I hope everyone had a lovely day yesterday if you celebrated. Paying subscribers got a special 420-lineup of events that were announced after my last Tuesday letter. If you subscribe to the paid tier of this newsletter you can expect more events coverage for stuff that falls through the cracks of the Tuesday lineup. I’m talking surprise appearances at clubs, last min event announcements by producers, and more secret shows. This is addition to the in-depth coverage you’re getting Frida. I can’t say enough subscribe to the paid tier. It’s worth it.
Anyway, on with this week’s events.
Club Quarantine
When: Every night, 9-12:00 EST
Where: Zoom, check @clubquarantine on Instagram at 9pm EST for the code
What: I keep putting this down because the people of Club Quarantine are BRINGING IT. The first of the now omnipresent Zoom clubs, last week the queer dance party had Danny L. Harle takeover!!! Like honestly you don’t need my newsletter you just need to keep track of who they’re booking. At this point you’ve probably been to a pale imitation of what Club Quarantine is serving (a Zoom “club” with a bored DJ, 13 people nodding blankly, and 20 blank screens), but you deserve the real deal.
How Much: Free
Mia & Spencer Sleepover Happy Hour
When: Tuesday 8:30pm EST
Where: Instagram @pompomsqaud and @theophelias
What: A informal thing where Mia of the very good indie-rock band Pom Pom Squad does a happy hour with someone on instagram live. This week it’s Spencer from the indie pop band The Ophelias. They promise news songs and covers on the flyer, so tune in!

GET ME BACK IN A BAR: What’s Happening?
When: Tuesday 6pm EST
Where: Intragram @mthrtrsa & @brendan.germain
What: I’ve already talked about MTHR THRSA in this newsletter (click the link to catch up"). What Are We Doing Tonight is her madcap show with MX Nobody 2019 Brenda, a pretty queen with plenty of classic stage training and a habit of pointed social commentary. Their IRL version of this show is full of narrative arts, jokey stunts, and general buffoonery, so I’m excited to see them online.
How Much: free but tip the girls.
Cabernet Cabret
When: Wednesday at 8pm EST
Where: @catccohen on Instagram live
What: Catherine Cohen is one of the best comedians out right now. The standup star also has a musical side to her. BQ (that’s before quarantine) she had a weekly cabaret show at Club Cumming. Now it’s digital, so tune in with a bottle of rose ready. Be careful not to spit wine all over your loungewear. Watch her perform her song “Look at me” if you need convincing.

Snack Theatre Presents: Breaking News
When: Wednesday 8pm EST
Where: twitch.tv/Snack_Theater
What: Snack Theatre is an immersive drag theatre hybrid that normally takes place at the Chealsea Music Hall. The show always weaves together disparate drag/burlesque performances with a plot and theme. When I talked with the founders Rara Darling and Angelica Sundae about the show for Wussy they stressed how they wanted Snack Theatre to be a place that provides high production value to properly showcase performers who are more accustomed to giving shows in the back of gay bars. I’m very intrigued to see what unfolds when they don’t have a theatre at their disposable. We know the show is going to be based on a newscast and we know the stellar cast: Esther, Shanita Bump, Baby Love, Junior Mint, Jax. It’s truly the best lineup of BK talent you’ll see this week, or maybe any week.
How Much: donation based but TIP THE PERFORMERS. You can buy an advance ticket on Eventbrite because this is an organized affair.
Digital Drag Cyber 6
When: Friday 10pm EST
Where:twitch.tv/biqtchpuddin
What: The best place to go if you’ve never seen a modern drag show but you’ve always wanted to take a peak. Biqtch Puddin has made her one-off Twitch show a weekly affair. The Dragula winner is seamlessly mixing big names in alternative drag with well-deserving up and comers. Hollow Eve, Molly Rimswell, and The Duplex of Gay are the more young and hungry acts this week.
How Much: $10 Suggested Donation
Big Ass Telethon to End Metronormativity
When: Saturday 9pm EST
Where: https://www.twitch.tv/endmetronormativity
What: Metronormativitly describes the modern circumstance where the only queer experiences shown are the ones that take place in cities, what your redneck uncle might call costal enclaves. The fact is that queer folks are everywhere, from the south the midwest. Those who chose to make their homes outside the bubble of Brooklyn are just as deserving of recognition and recourses that the metro queers do. The Big Ass Telethon seeks to provide that recognition and funnel some coin to the southern/rural queers who need it. Hosted by the Atlanta-based culture publication Wussy (who I’ve written for), the fest Southern Fried Queer Pride, and the instagram @queerappalachia, the event will raise money for the newly formed Appalachian/Southern Queer Artist Fund, an emergency fund set up to monetarily support the featured artists, not just during the COVID-19 crisis, but further and beyond in the form of micro-grants.
If all of that nobleness wasn’t enough, this gig has a seriously stacked lineup. Seth Bogart, formerly of the bands Gravy Train, Hunx and His Punx, will be performing his solo material. The gay outlaw cowboy Orville Peck will be playing his country tunes. The comedians Whitney Cummings and Bob The Drag Queen will also do sets along with other drag artists, musicians, comedians, dancers, and more.
How Much: sis it’s a telethon DONATE MONEY
Sunday’s Best: a drag Sermon
When: Sunday 4pm EST
Where:@juniormintt on Instagram
What: Junior Mint is one of my favorite new drag performers right now. She’s got defined aesthetic, rocking braids with balloons attached. Her performances are similarly unique. Junior Mint’s numbers combine classic balladry with humorous monologues about trans rights, capitalism, and whiteness. She describes her new Sunday show as a place where “We’ll laugh, we’ll feel positive, but most importantly, you’ll learn something.” Sign me up!
