Hello fellow bedroom pop fans,
This is The Deviant Dispatch. I’m Mo, your guide to the underground. On Wednesday I write about events. On Friday I write about gossip for paying subscribers (just $5 a month). If you can, please consider becoming a paying subscriber so I can devote myself to this grind full time. If you don’t have the coins, please share this with someone or hit the heart button at the top of this post.
While Told Slant is a long way away from releasing new music, Charli XCX added a verse to Elio’s song “Charger” for our auditory pleasure. Listen below as you explore this week’s lineup of events.
I’ve got lots of gossip in store for this Friday’s newsletter, including drama about a secret basement party, a controversy over a new drag pageant, and Azalea Bank’s new religion. Make sure you’re subscribed to the paid tier of this newsletter so you don’t miss anything.
See you then.
XOXO,
Mo
Printed Matter Book Fair
When: Wednesday - Sunday (but really the opening ceremony at 4pm on Wednesday is the key feature)
Where: pmvabf.org︎︎︎
What: This virtual book fair is a version of an IRL even that happens ever year. Not your stuffy aunt’s book fair, Printed Matter always has cutting edge zines and volumes. This year is no different, with some titles including Malibu Monday, C8LYN
The opening program features indie rapper Sammus, Bushwick alt-pop provocateur Macy Rodman, and a presentation by the rave Melting Point which includes Deli Girls and F00d C0rps, and lighting design by Jeffrey Strausser, produced at H0l0.
How much: Free baby!
The Hole NYC’s Gallery Hours
When: Wednesday-Sunday 12-7pm
Where: 312 Bowery NYC
What: This gallery has been all over my Tik Tok feed due to these touchable emoji sculptures. Fuzzy and fun, but also not something I’d recommend during Covid times. Now the exhibit has swapped out for handblown glass sculptures and surrealist paintings. The culprits are Ry David Bradley, Hannah Hansdotter and Kevin Christy. Go see their stuff IRL and support art that’s not algorithm-friendly.
How much: free
Paperboy Prince Love Gallery
When: Mon-Fri 12-7pm
Where: 1254 Myrtle Avenue
What: When I reported that rapper and organizer Paperboy Prince was raising money for a gallery space in September, I was skeptical that the space would open. Lo and behold, I was wrong! Despite their Gofundme currently being $47,700 from reaching their goal, The Love Gallery is currently open 5 days a week. Instead of art you’ll currently find a trendy selection of secondhand clothing. Word on the street is that soon the gallery will be hosting secret parties (Covid-safe, they say) for people who RSVP to secret email blasts. If you wanna get on the email list, scope out the scene, or just need a cute new pair of sunglasses, head to Love Gallery.
How much: Free to go, stuff starts at $10 and gets more expensive from there.
Escape from New York
When: Friday 11:59pm
Where: a secret location in Miami, text +1 (786) 432-2433 for more info
What: The party that everyone is talking about, for all the wrong reasons. Linux, trans club kid and occasional vocalist, is throwing a rave in Miami for all the people who are tired NYC clubs are closed. Described as a “masked + socially distant rave” the party will feature10 DJs and 3 different rooms. Despite requiring “a recent test or vaccination card at the door,” the party quickly drew detractors online for obvious reasons.
Are you planning on going, or know someone who is? Email me at thedeviantdispatch@gmail.com and spill the tea (anonymously if you want). For a full coverage of the drama surrounding this affair, subscribe to the paid tier of this newsletter.
How much: $40
The Hole Stretch
When: Friday, 7-10pm
Where: The new bar Tailgate 86n 11th ST, Brooklyn
What: Charlene “Scenario” Incarnate and Tyler Ashley are throwing a drag race party viewing for pandemic times at a new outdoor sports bar. Each 8-person table has it’s own heater, and flatscreen TV. If you’re wondering why you would leave the comfort of your apartment to watch drag race (and the American one at that), Charlene is promising to spill tons of backstage tea via her friend Kandy Muse. Plus her and Tyler’s nonstop shows are famous for their debauchery. Last Friday Charlene drunkenly rolled around in the snow during a number.
How much: $10 a ticket, you can only reserve with 4 or more people tho, RSVP
SOPHIEFEST
When: Saturday, 9pm EST
Where: twitch.tv/SOPHIEFest
What: SOPHIEfest is a digital festival and fundraiser celebrating the life of producer and icon SOPHIE. Produced by a team queer and trans people from around the world, it’s being organized by Chicago drag queen Irregular Girl. Another Chicago fave Abhijeet will be making visuals for the DJ sets. She promises “lots of clouds, butterflies, sims and stars … a digital trans utopia.” Other notable names include my DJ mentor DJ Accident Report and drag queens Miss Toto and Bitqtch Pudding.
All the funds raised will go to a trio of organizations: For the Gworls, Gendered Intelligence, and Thorn Self Defense.
How much: technically free but like, going to a fundraiser and not giving funs is NOT a cute look.
