Hi my little pony boys and girls,
This is The Deviant Dispatch. I’m Mo, your guide to the underground. On Wednesday I write about events. On Friday I write about gossip for paying subscribers (just $5 a month). If you can, please consider becoming a paying subscriber so I can devote myself to this grind full time. If you don’t have the coins, please share this with someone or hit the heart button.
Hello to all my new subscribers, especially my roommate Adam! Sorry that this newsletter is coming a little late. It’s been a busy here at Deviant Dispatch HQ. I’ve been applying for several full-time journalism jobs, which means writing cover letters instead of trolling Instragram for cool parties. It also means that several posts that were previously available only to paying subscribers are now free! This was so prospective bosses could see what hot shit I am, but you can benefit as well! Below are two of my posts that used to be paywalled, along with some key passages.
I Hate Capitalism But Love My Paying Subscribers
I’m especially feeling the weight of the market system this week. Dolly Parton has updated 9 to 5 to be about your second job, because one isn’t enough anymore! In a gross Superbowl ad (WHY is there a Superbowl this year?) Dolly rewrites her working class anthem to include working AFTER you clock out of your office job. It’s the updated anthem for our modern hellscape where you’re expected to have a main job AND a side hustle that secures you food/rent/loan payments. It’s all possible with Squarespace! Thanks Dolly. 🙄🤢🤮
Ella Emhoff Is a Model Now ? Ok Sure
I like Ella Emhoff. As a former-resident of Bushwick with green hair, I have a soft spot for her aesthetic. I think it’s nice to see someone “cool” be associated with the White House and DC for a change. I love the idea of her subtly mocking homophobic politicians. But this signing with IMG shows how quickly the industry opts for shallow representations of diversity. This veil of diversity is being used to frame casting another thin white woman as change. Meaningful change would be racial and size inclusivity and a more sustainable / eco-friendly business model. All this shows is how far being a political insider will get you in creative fields.
Cute! Hope you enjoyed that peak behind the paywall. Now without further ado, the relevant events of the week.
XOxo,
Mo
