Hello fellow citizens,
Welcome to The Deviant Dispatch. It’s Mo, your guide to the underground world of Brooklyn and beyond. On Wednesday I write about events for free. On Friday I write about gossip, usually for paying subscribers (just $5 a month!). Fortunately I’m throwing all the cheapscapes a bone and letting you read this one for free. If you can, please consider becoming a paying subcriber so I can pay rent.
The video above is a music video for the 100 Gecs remix/cover of the iconic Linkin Park song “One Step Closer” and it is certainly a mood! Our country is a house of cards hot-glued together! After the events of this week I am about to break!!!!
In honor of the attempted coup I’m listing places in NYC that are harder to get into than the Capitol Building. This is assuming you are a mob of Trump supporters that also have the support of the Trump-voting police. This is also assuming it’s pre-Covid times when we would pack into dark venues without the word “super spreader” entering our minds. Let’s get into it!
7 NYC Hotspots Harder to Breach Than The Capitol
The Rosemont Bathroom (the one with a lock) . The line of gays waiting to do lines in there is so long I would regularly go pee around the corner. The protestors would have just gotten impatient waiting and gone to their hotels.
Paul’s Baby Grand Where was Ludwig, the famed bouncer of this Mahattan lounge, when capitol police needed helping keeping out the riff raff?
The Dreamhouse during the last month of it’s existence. That place hit capacity by midnight during all of their many many going away parties, and normally you didn’t get there till 2 am at the earliest. The mob of trump supporters would have been forced to eat nachos at Bonus Room down the street.
Market Hotel during a sold-out show. So many times I’ve arrived to a hot bill thinking I’d just buy tickets at the door only to be denied. I guess getting shut down makes you a real stickler for capacity rules.
Bossa Nova Civic Club in 2016 Now the OG Bushwick destination for techno has fallen on harder times, but back in the day the line would routinely stretch down the block. The MAGA mob would be stuck cramming into a booth a Birdy’s nearby.
The Supreme Store on Bowery the day of a drop Sure a mob of people waiving American flags is threatening, but have you ever seen a mob of streetwear-hungry skaters? They’ll roast you and hop a turnstile without breaking a sweat. Teenagers scare the living shit out of me. The bouncers at the store keep them in check, limiting how much they can buy at a time to discourage resellers. Those MAGA goons wouldn’t stand a chance.
a Table at Charlene and Tyler Ashey’s Drag Brunch. Honey if you don’t have a reservation good luck getting a table. The MAGA mob would have to try and watch the dynamic duo through the windows on the sidewalk. No mimosas for Tump supporters.
Miscellaneous Gossip
Tik Toker Ava Louise, who started the rumor that Kanye slept with a male beauty guru, has come out and said “there is literally not one bit of truth to anything I have said.” This is probably too mainstream for me to cover, but I couldn’t resist sharing the fact that Jeffree Star is a known racist and before he was a makeup guru he was a Myspace pop star who was buzzy enough to get a young Nicki Minaj on a song. Only listen if you have a strong stomach.
Formerly buzzy indie musicians Ariel Pink and John Maus were among the people at the Trump Rally yesterday that turned into an attempted coup. Maria Sherman with Jezebel has the details. If you don’t wanna click through just know we’ve known Ariel Pink was a scumbag for a while, but John Maus has song’s called “Cop Killer” and “Rights for Gays” so people were more surprised.
Linux, New York party girl and aspiring trans icon, spent this week partying in Miami. At least it wasn’t Puerto Vallarta? (She did test negative for Covid while there, but still 😬😬😬)
Brooklyn DIY venue and art space Rubulad has 3 days left in their fundraiser to stay open. As an off-the-books establishment, the all-ages space isn’t eligible for loans that other venues are getting as a part of the newly passed stimulus bill. They still need $2,073 to make their goal, so donate here if you’re able.
As a parting gift here’s a newly leaked Sophie song. Sounds to me like it could have been a Rihanna demo but who’s to say? The beat is 4 years old (Sophie has played it live) but this is the first time I’m hearing a vocalist on it. Sounds pretty fab!
