4 IRL and Online Parties For NYE 2020
featuring a underground rave, a winter-themed art exhibit, and some drag
Hello revelers,
Welcome to The Deviant Dispatch. I’m Mo, your guide to the underground world of Brooklyn and beyond. On Wednesday I write about events for free. On Friday I write about gossip for money (paying members only). There will be snark, and sometimes typos.
New Years Eve is tomorrow, and I must say when I started this newsletter I had an inkling that we might not be back to normal. What I wouldn’t have expected the Zoom party fatigue that’s swept over the landscape. Most of the people I know aren’t planning on logging onto a virtual party or even trying to stay warm in a bar’s outside patio. We’re all just staying home, either alone or at an ill-advised apt party.
NYE always had too much hype around it anyway. It’s traditionally amateur hour for nightlife. People who don’t normally party flood every bar and club determined to have a wild night, annoying all the regulars. Plus, the pressure to ring in the new year right makes everyone stay out later and party harder. I remember the desperation I felt one year after the two queer raves I was planning on going to got shut down by the police. I ended up in an apt at 3am tending to a girl whose head was bleeding from when I mistakenly closed a car door into her. Not fun.
So a part of me is excited to take it easy this year, to make a decadent meal and watch fireworks from my roof. If you’re looking to live it up in an attempt to start the new year off on a revelrous note, here are some shindigs for you.
Take care bbs,
xoxo

Melting Point
When: Thursday 8pm NYC time
Where: twitch.TV/MeltingPointNYC
What: In the before times Melting Point threw massive raves filled with hardcore techno and experimental music. The dress code would be punk meets goth, and there would frequently be art installations as well. They’d always be “fundravers” AKA benefits for various causes.
Despite being a year full of causes, Melting Point have been relatively quiet this year. Now they’re helping ring in the new year with a virtual rave with DJs like Total Freedom (who brings cunty energy to their techno blends), goth rapper VIOLENCE, and the experimental popstar Eartheater. The party is a benefiting Al Otro Lado , who according to their instagram are “a bi-national organization providing free legal and humanitarian aid for deportees, refugees + separated families.” Half of the proceeds will go to the org, and half will benefit the artists.
How Much: Free but like, you should donate.
Bad Judy
When: Thursday 2pm and 6pm NYC time
Where: Good Judy, 563 5th Avenue
What: A drag show and party from Brooklyn’s newest queer bar Good Judy. Opened by the same owners as C’mon Everybody, their staff includes indie rock figures like Charly Bliss bassist Dan Sure. Bad Judy is their semi-monthly drag show, and for NYE the queens Essa Noche, JAX, and Rify Royalty will be giving shows. JAX in particular is one of the most spirited NYC drag performers around, and Essa Noche brings a latnix Miss Piggy energy that you didn’t know you needed.
How much: $35 (RSVP for a spot)
The Rosemont
When: 7pm NYC Time
Where: The Rosemont, 63 Montrose
What: Rosemont regulars DJ P_A_Tand Magenta will be hosting a outside NYE party in the bar’s notoriously cliquey backyard. It’s full of heaters so it should be relativly warm. DM one of them to secure your spot
How much: DM P_A_T to RSVP
Rubulad Proudly Presents: Winter Wonderland
When: Thursday 6 to 10PM
Where: The Rubulad (secret address) RSVP here
What: A immersive art display that the venue describes as “ An Outdoor, Socially-Distant, Light-Up Bedazzlement.” They’re Halloween show had me seriously spooked and impressed, so that’s the only reason this one is on here. DJ Dirtyfinger will be spinning alongside a go-go dancer, but I predict you’ll probs want to just peacefully take in the scene instead.
How much: Free
