Hello ladies/everyone,
It’s Mo AKA DJ Gay Panic and this(!) is The Deviant Dispatch. I keep a faggoty ear to the ground, delivering you the latest news on NYC’s greatest underground parties, rock shows, and ACTUAL raves- every fuckin’ week. Plus you’ll get it-girl gossip, cultural speculation, snark, typos, and lots of Charli XCX updates. To throw me some much-needed support, become a paying subscriber, share this with someone, or hit the heart button at the top of the post!
Hope everyone is doing ok. In personal news, I’ve been getting over my first bought of food poisoning. Not sure what caused me to be violently ill for two days, but I have some ideas.
Things in culture that gave me food poisoning:
People in the Midwest finding out I live in New York and saying “the crime is getting worse” with the tone of voice reserved for mythical demons, without being able to name a single crime that’s happened recently.
People in the Midwest complaining The Black Lives Matter protestors have destroyed buildings in New York (spray paint and broken windows are not the same as burning down a building!)
The new PinkPantheress & Willow Smith song “Where u are” being so sick (positive) that it literally made me vomit.
parties at Paul’s Casablanca, a
loungebar that only cares about how much money you spend or how many instagram followers you have. The Red Scare Girls getting mad that Vanity Fair correctly labeled them as a part of the new conservative wing in the US.
The news that Charli XCX has partnered with Doritos and Netflix to give a “virtual concert” in the Upside Down from Stranger Things. This much branding caused me to dry heave at least 3 times.
Half of Brooklyn “going off grid in the woods for the next week!”
The people who are proudly posting about going off grid? Odds are they’re going the woods in celebration of Beltane, a pagan holiday Boston Public Library dot com tells me marks the peak of spring. There’s traditionally a maypole and for most of the tinkerbell crew, plenty of drugs. In a larger sense, these celebrations encourage attendees to ‘‘throw off the ugly green frog skin of hetero-imitation” as their once leader Harry Hay said.
For those of us not in the woods and feeling the chafe of that frog skin, here’s a blast from the past: The 10 year anniversary of Marina and The Diamonds’ album Electra Heart is here! Nylon published an oral history that explores the making of the album and it’s signature aesthetic if you’re unfamiliar. I highly encourage you to put the full album on and have a twirl around your bedroom before checking out this week’s events.
XOXO
Mo
p.s. for those playing along the typo of the week last week was not including when the 8ball Community benefit for Rash was, but that’s why I include the flyers. Look closely for this week’s typo, and respond to this email if you catch it.
